Here lately, Navigon has been crushing it on the iPhone GPS front. Every couple of weeks, it seems that MobileNavigator is getting yet another fantastic update, all while TomTom's lackluster offering hangs back in the land of complacency. Thankfully for us all, the outfit has just pushed out the v1.3 update, which adds real-time traffic (an unfortunate $19.99 add-on), Google local search, updated roadways, automatic music fading between text-to-speech instructions and the ability to add locations from other apps and websites. We'd still recommend Navigon's software if you're looking to buy into iPhone GPS for the first time, but this is certainly a boon for those already locked into the TomTom alternative.

Samsung Soon Shipping 32GB 40-nm Class Memory Module

Today Samsung announced that it has begun shipping samples of the industry’s highest-density memory, a 32GB module designed for advanced servers doubling the previous density with increased power yet reducing energy requirements.

The highly-efficient 32GB RDIMM consists of 36 dual-die 40nm-class 4Gb DDR3 chips that can perform at equal or greater levels to a 40nm-based 16GB RDIMM with no increase in power consumption.

Samsung is using the industries highest-density monolithic DDR3 device,  a 40-nanometer (nm) class, four gigabit DDR3 chip  as the building block for the new 32GB module and mass production of the chip is expected to start next month.

First High-Energy Collisions Completed in Geneva

The first collisions from the Large Hadron Collider LHC the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator took place in Geneva just after noon today BST.Ending more than a year of frustration for scientists on the project.

“This is a major breakthrough. We are going where nobody has been before. We have opened a new territory for physics” explained Oliver Buchmueller, one of the key scientists on the Cern project.

In the experiment the atomic particles are smashed together in head-on collisions, with each beam having an energy of 3.5 trillion electron volts.

Scientists are mimicking the conditions moments after the Big Bang and hope that the LHC will eventually find evidence for the existence of the Higgs boson. A particle that theoretically gives matter mass that has never been detected before. Giving new insights into the nature of the strong interaction and the evolution of matter in the early Universe.

EBay, NRF to take on organized retail crime

(Reuters) - EBay Inc and the National Retail Federation, the trade group for the retail industry, said on Monday they have teamed to combat organized retail crime.

The partnership, which will receive support from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, aims to help law enforcement in criminal probes and to prevent crimes in which goods are stolen from brick-and-mortar stores and then resold online.
Retail theft, dubbed "shrink" by the industry, reached nearly $115 billion globally last year, according to a report released in November from the UK-based Center for Retail Research and Checkpoint Systems.
While part of the loss comes from shoplifting by the public and theft by employees, the dent from organized retail crime can be even greater, as goods are stolen in bulk.
According to a 2009 NRF study, 92 percent of retailers complained of organized retail crime in the past year. Some 73 percent said the level of such crime had risen.
EBay, a vast e-commerce marketplace where buyers and sellers connect, has long striven to ensure that brands sold on its site are legitimate and that posts from sellers peddling counterfeit goods are quickly removed.
Still, brands complain that stolen goods easily make their way to the Internet, where their origins are more difficult to track.
EBay and the NRF said representatives from their groups would meet on a regular basis to brainstorm the best ways to prevent organized retail crime, while using new technology to identify and track crime rings.
They said they will collaborate with the FBI to help identify crime rings responsible for stealing merchandise in bulk and work together on legislation to strengthen resources for federal law enforcement and enhance penalties for crimes.

iPad Goes on Pre-Sale Friday Morning

Four in five believe Web access a fundamental right

A poll of 27,000 adults in 26 countries for the BBC World Service showed 78 percent of Internet users believed the Web gave them greater freedom, while nine in 10 said it was a good place to learn.
Respondents in the United States were above the average in believing the Internet was a source for greater freedom and they were also more confident than most in expressing their opinions online.
However, others felt concern about spending time online, with 65 percent of respondents in Japan saying they did not feel they could express their opinions safely online, a sentiment that was also felt in South Korea, France, Germany and China.

The PSP Go Expected in June

The PSP Go is a new handheld that lightens the load of the older PSP models by making games available via wireless download or on Memory Stick Micro cards.
The  PSP will feature 16GB of on-board flash memory for storage of downloadable games, movies and music from the Playstation Network. It looks like they’ve revamped the controller to slide out from under the screen to maximize screen real-estate while keeping the console small (the Go has a 3.8″ display – just a hair smaller than the PSP-3000’s 4.3″ screen).
Rummors says the PSP Go! will be unveiled at the E3 summit in June, and will hit Japanese markets in September and come to the United States in the Fall.

The Energizer DUO Trojan:

The Duo seems to have been a failed experiment for battery maker Energizer in more ways than one. Sales of the USB nickle-metal battery charging station never really took off, and now, via a press release, the company has announced the monitoring software distributed with the Duo packs a fairly nasty Windows trojan. The rogue code, according to Computerworld: “listens for commands on TCP port 7777… can download and execute files, transmit files stolen from the PC, or tweak the Windows registry. The Trojan automatically executes each time the PC is turned on, and remains active, even if the Energizer charger is not connected to the machine.” Energizer released a statement saying: “Energizer is currently working with both CERT and U.S. government officials to understand how the code was inserted in the software.”

Apple iPad will arrive in store on April 3

Sony would develop similar portable devices like the iPad to compete with Apple

Threatened by Apple Inc.'s growing stable of portable devices, Sony Corp. is developing a new lineup of handheld products, including a smart phone capable of downloading and playing videogames, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Japanese electronics giant also is developing a portable device that shares characteristics of netbooks, electronic-book readers and handheld-game machines. The device is designed to compete against multifunction products such as Apple's coming iPad tablet, these people said.

iPad Production Delays

 Apple fans might have to wait another full month to get his or her hands on the company’s latest device, the iPad. 

The report that comes from Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek said there's an "unspecified production problem" with iPad manufacturer Hon Hai Precision. This will reportedly limit the number of iPads sold at launch to 300,000, and they'll only be available in the United States. It's possible, Misek said, that Apple will delay the launch until April due to the extremely low number of iPads for sale.

Apple Inc sued Taiwan's HTC Corp, which makes touchscreen smartphones using Google software, accusing it of infringing 20 hardware and software patents related to the iPhone.

Even though the suit did not name Google Inc as a defendant, Apple's move was viewed by many analysts as proxy for an attack on the Internet company, whose Nexus One smartphone is manufactured by HTC."I think this is kind of an indirect lawsuit against Google," said Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu.
Apple's suit was filed with both the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. District Court in Delaware on Tuesday, and seeks to prohibit HTC from selling, marketing or distributing infringing products in the United States.

Microsoft Claims Vulnerability in VBScript Could Allow Remote Code Execution

Microsoft is investigating new public reports of a vulnerability in VBScript that is exposed on supported versions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 through the use of Internet Explorer. The investigation has shown that the vulnerability cannot be exploited on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2008. The main impact of the vulnerability is remote code execution. They are not aware of attacks that try to use the reported vulnerabilities or of customer impact at this time.

Skype gets into Nokia smartphones

Internet telephony firm Skype took a second major leap into the wireless market in just a few weeks, unveiling software from top phone maker Nokia Oyj which could run on more than 200 million smartphones around the world.

The new Skype for Symbian software is available for free download from Nokia's Ovi Store to consumers globally.

ITunes Reaches 10 Billions Downloads

Apple announced on Thursday that Louie Sulcer of Woodstock, Ga., clicked the “Buy Song” button at an opportune time, downloading the 10 billionth song from the company’s iTunes Store since the site went active in April 2003. Phone Battery Can Be Charge in 10 Seconds

Scientistists Develop a revolutionary mobile phone battery that recharges in 10 seconds instead of several hours.

The new device charges 100 times as fast as a conventional battery and could also be used in phones, laptops, iPods and digital cameras.

The same technology could even allow an electric car to be charged up in the same time.

The MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) team say their invention uses materials already available to battery manufacturers and would be simple to mass produce.

Energy-harvesting rubber sheets could power pacemakers, mobile phones

Power-generating rubber films developed by Princeton University engineers could harness natural body movements such as breathing and walking to power pacemakers, mobile phones and other electronic devices.


The material, composed of ceramic nanoribbons embedded onto silicone rubber sheets, generates electricity when flexed and is highly efficient at converting mechanical energy to electrical energy.

Nokia Is Going Green

In times of global warming many companies are trying to find the way to hep the earth is not the exception for Nokia developing programs to fight against Global Warming.

The Concept:

Consist of two parts a sensor unit that can analyze the environment , health and local weather conditions and a mobile phone.

The sensor unit will be worn on a wrist or neck strap made from solar cells that provide power to the sensors. NFC (near field communication) technology will relay information by touch from the sensors to the phone or to or to other devices that support NFC technology.

Both the phone and the sensor unit will be as compact as possible to minimize material use, and those materials used in the design will be renewable and/or reclaimed. Technologies used inside the phone and sensor unit will also help save energy.
